History

Bodrum: Windmill Bodrum is a historic town known in the ancient world as Halicarnassus and was the birthplace of Herodotus the so-called “Father of History”. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world was built here – the original Mausoleum. Built to commemorate the life of king Mausolus, the ruler of this area, some two thousand years ago, it was a magnificent marble structure which unfortunately now lies in ruins, the remains of which can be visited in the town.

During the Crusades, on their way to the Holy Land, the Knights of St. John built the magnificent castle that sits astride the two bays that make up Bodrum harbour. The castle now houses the unique ‘Museum of Underwater Archaeology’, the first of its kind in the world, which displays finds from shipwrecks around the Aegean. To find out more please visit the website at www.bodrum-museum.com

All the great civilisations of the Mediterranean have left their mark here and the town is rich in remains from the Dorians, Persians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans, to name but a few.

Geography and Climate

Bodrum Town is the gateway to a beautiful peninsula of green pine forests, mandarin groves and turquoise seas. It has over 200 bays and beaches, many of which have been given Blue Flag status for their cleanliness and safety. It has long been a magnet for Turkish holidaymakers and has grown hugely in popularity with Europeans since package holidays started in the mid- 1980s.

Bodrum has its own busy international airport with scheduled and charter flights arriving daily all through the year. It is just under 30 minutes drive from Bodrum town centre.

The weather here is clear and sunny for approximately 250 days of the year with low humidity. There is some rain during the mild winters but it is needed in order to maintain the green vegetation, such as the olive and mandarin trees and pine forests.

On the southern coast of the peninsular lie the golden sandy beaches at Bardakci, Gumbet, Bitez, Ortakent Yahsi, Karaincir, Bagla and Akyarlar, while on the western side are Gumusluk, Yalikavak and Turgutries. For those who want seclusion, the northern coast boasts Turkbuku, Golkoy and Gundogan, all small fishing villages.
