A brief history
In the first half of the second millennium AD Spain flourished as a centre of Christian, Jewish and Islamic scholarship, and following the expulsion of the latter two religions in 1492 rose to become the first global super-power via its conquest of the New World of America and the riches it acquired as a result. In more recent centuries the development of modern rail and air travel brought the boom of the tourist industry in the 1960s, which today represents a significant percentage of national income. Spain today Spain today remains a heady mixture of cultures and races inherited from its diverse history, reflected in its rich language where Latin and Arabic influences intermingle, its architecture, its cuisine and its folklore. Its climate, also varying regionally, is known to most of us for the days of seemingly unbroken sunshine enjoyed by its Mediterranean coastal strip and Southern hinterland. Living in Spain has never been easier. The Spanish people, although differing from region to region, are uniformly polite, welcoming, warm-hearted and proud. Most of the population is Roman Catholic. In today's sophisticated modern Spain it is easy to forget that it only became a democracy again in 1975, when it became a constitutional monarchy along British lines. Spain was admitted to the EU at the end of the 20th century, during which time it created a social and commercial infrastructure that qualifies it as one of today's forefront modern industrial, technological and creative countries. Whether for work, leisure or pleasure, living in Spain today is a rich and rewarding experience, and oh yes, the sun shines on you while you are doing it! |

The recorded history of Spain goes back beyond Roman Times. In the first
millennium AD it provided two Emperors of Rome, and was occupied and
colonized by the Moorish Arabs of northern Africa.
